The Day I Stopped Asking for Signs - and Started Listening Within

For most of my life, I used to ask God for signs.
Signs that everything would be okay.
Signs that the decision I was making was right.
Signs that I wasn’t walking into another heartbreak, another failure, another storm.

I would look for them everywhere — in dreams, in people’s words, in random coincidences. Sometimes, I would even ask, “God, if You want me to go ahead, let someone call me right now.” Or “If this is Your will, show me a sign before the end of today.”

And sometimes, signs did come. But other times, silence was the only answer. And that silence used to scare me until one day, I learned that silence itself can be sacred. That deep within the stillness, there’s a voice — calm, firm, and loving, guiding us when we dare to listen.

This is my story, how I stopped asking for signs, and started listening within.

When My Husband Fell Ill

It started like any other day. My husband wasn’t feeling well, and we thought it was something small — maybe stress, maybe fatigue. But within days, it worsened. The hospital visits became longer, the nights heavier, and the doctor’s faces more serious.

At some point, I could see fear even in their eyes.
Everyone around me began to lose hope. Friends whispered comforting words that sounded more like final goodbyes. Family members began to prepare me for “whatever might happen.”

But deep inside, something refused to agree.

At first, I was terrified. I cried until there were no tears left. I felt my faith shaking like a fragile branch in a storm. But then, in the middle of one of those long hospital nights, when the machines kept beeping and the room smelled of medicine and despair, I sat quietly and said, “God, I can’t do this anymore. Please speak to me.”

And He did.
Not through a thunder or a sudden miracle.
But through a still, soft voice deep inside of me that whispered, “He will live. You will not be a widow.”

That voice brought me peace.
From that moment, something shifted. I stopped focusing on what I saw and started holding on to what I heard inside. I began to speak those words out loud: “My husband will live.” I said it every morning, every time I walked into his hospital room, every time fear tried to creep in.

Days turned into weeks and slowly, my husband began to recover. One test result improved, then another, and then one morning, the doctor walked in smiling.
He said, “He’s going to be fine.”

Tears of gratitude filled my eyes. I didn’t need any more signs. I had heard God clearly through that quiet voice within me.

When Fear Followed Me on the Road

Months later, I faced another test — fear of traveling.

We were planning a trip, and even though everything was fine, my mind was filled with what ifs.
What if we get into an accident?
What if something terrible happens on the way?

Fear can be cruel; it paints pictures in your head until you start believing them. But then again, that same calm voice rose within me, saying, “Fear not. You will arrive safely.”

This time, I didn’t argue. I trusted it.
And true to those words, the journey went smoothly. Every time my heart raced, I whispered to myself, “I am safe. God is with me.”

I realized something powerful that day:
The inner voice isn’t always loud, but it’s always true.
It doesn’t scream — it gently reminds you of who you are, of what you carry, of the strength and peace already living inside you.

When I Lost My Job

One of the hardest seasons of my life was when I lost my job.

It felt like the ground was pulled from under me. Everything I had built — the stability, the plans, the sense of purpose disappeared overnight. I felt angry, disappointed, and afraid. How would I survive? How would I take care of my family? How would I start again?

I remember sitting alone in my room one morning, staring at the ceiling and asking God for a sign, “Should I keep looking for another job? Should I start a business? Should I just give up?”

And again, the answer came quietly:
“Start again. Don’t give up. This ending is the beginning of something new.”

That was all I needed.
I took a deep breath, wiped my tears, and started planning again.

I used the little I had left to begin a small business. At first, it was slow, but each day, something improved. Customers started coming. New opportunities opened. Slowly, my business grew and before I knew it, I was earning more than I ever did at my former job.

That experience taught me that sometimes, when a door closes, it’s not a punishment, it’s a push toward your purpose.

If you’re reading this and you’ve lost something — a job, a relationship, or even your sense of direction, please remember:
You haven’t lost everything. You still have that inner compass within you. Listen to it. It knows the way home.

The Day I Lost My Father

But the hardest test of all came on May 10, 2025.

That day, I lost my beloved father.

The phone call came in the middle of the day. I can still hear the trembling voice on the other end saying, “He’s gone.”

For a moment, everything around me froze. My knees weakened, and my heart felt like it had been shattered into pieces. It was as if I couldn’t breathe.
My world went quiet, painfully quiet.

I thought I would collapse. I thought I couldn’t survive it. Losing a parent is like losing a part of yourself — a voice that has guided you all your life suddenly goes silent.

And yet, even in that deep sorrow, that same inner voice whispered again:
“You will be strong. You will make it through. I am with you.”

Those words became my anchor.

The days that followed were extremely tough — especially the financial aspect.
In African culture, burial ceremonies are not just emotional; they’re expensive. There were bills, transportation costs, family expectations, and so many things that had to be done. I didn’t even know where to begin.

But one night, I prayed and declared, “God, You said You will provide, and I believe You.”

Immediately after that prayer, things began to shift.
Family members began to send financial help I didn’t expect. A friend who hadn’t called in years suddenly reached out to assist. Every single need was met — not in luxury, but in sufficiency.

Even on my way traveling for the burial, I faced challenges — moments that could have cost me my life. But again, God intervened. Every obstacle cleared. Every threat turned to testimony.

Standing by my father’s grave, I felt peace. Not because the pain was gone, but because I knew I wasn’t alone. My inner voice, the same one that had guided me through fear, sickness, and loss, was still speaking:
“You will heal. You will live. You will rise again.”

The Power of the Inner Voice

Looking back now, I see a pattern, a divine thread running through every part of my life.

That inner voice isn’t just intuition. It’s faith speaking. It’s God’s Spirit reminding us of truth when everything around us screams lies. It’s the gentle push that tells you to keep believing, to keep moving, to keep hoping.

The world teaches us to look for signs — in people, in coincidences, in numbers. But the real sign is already within you: peace.

When something is right for you, peace will follow.
When something is wrong, chaos will grow.
That’s how I’ve learned to tell the difference.

Sometimes, you won’t get a big miracle.
Sometimes, the mountain won’t move immediately.
But that doesn’t mean God is silent, it means He’s speaking differently. And when you learn to listen, you’ll find strength where you thought there was none.

Encouragement for You

Maybe you’re going through something right now — an illness, a loss, a job challenge, or just a deep uncertainty about your future.
Maybe you’re still waiting for a “sign”, a confirmation that it will all be okay.

Let me tell you this: The sign you’re waiting for is already inside you.
That small, calm, steady voice that says, “You will make it.” that’s the one you need to follow.

Trust it.
Listen to it.
Speak it out loud.

When fear says, “You can’t,” answer, “I can and I will.”
When life says, “It’s over,” respond, “This is just the beginning.”
When loss says, “You’re alone,” whisper back, “I am surrounded by grace.”

What I Learned

  1. Listening within brings peace even before the solution arrives.
You may not see the full picture yet, but peace is proof that things are aligning in your favor.
  2. Positive words have power.
Every time I declared something good, it started manifesting, not magically, but spiritually. Words are seeds; plant them wisely.
  3. Miracles often begin with inner surrender.
The moment I stopped trying to control everything and chose to trust, doors began to open.
  4. Challenges don’t come to break us, but to build us.
Every hardship I faced taught me faith, resilience, and gratitude.

Call to Action: Listen to Your Own Voice

Today, I want to encourage you: stop asking for signs.
You already carry the answers you seek. The Creator who made you also placed His voice inside you.

That voice speaks through peace. It speaks through strength when you thought you had none. It speaks through ideas, through comfort, through unexpected courage.

Don’t rush to silence it with fear or doubt. Take a moment to breathe. Sit still. Listen.
And when you hear it, even faintly — trust it.

Because sometimes, the greatest miracles are not the ones we see around us, but the ones that happen within us.

Final Thoughts

The day I stopped asking for signs was the day I truly found faith.
Faith that doesn’t depend on what I see or hear from others, but on what I feel in the deepest part of me.

That inner voice has never failed me. It guided me through sickness, through fear, through loss, through recovery. And it continues to guide me today, one quiet whisper at a time.

If you’re facing something hard right now, remember this: You are stronger than you think. You are not alone. And your story is not over.

Trust that still, small voice within you because it’s not just you speaking.
It’s the voice of the One who has been with you all along.

If this story touched your heart, share it with someone who needs a reminder that hope still speaks even in silence.
And if you’re going through something today, pause for a moment, place your hand on your heart, and say:

“I will make it. I will rise. I am not alone.”

Because you truly aren’t.
